Training at 55+: How Much Can You Improve?

Today we answer another thoughtful question from our Smart Move community. Imagine you’re a masters athlete, 55+, who didn’t do much sports before discovering CrossFit. Since joining, your progress went up quickly at first, then continued steadily over time. Now you’re wondering:

As a late-starting masters athlete, can you still make real progress in CrossFit? And if you’re taking blood pressure medication, should you adjust your workout routine?

We explore this with empathy—because, honestly, we’ll all be in this stage sooner than we think. The surprising truth is that strength and performance can still improve as we age. With proper recovery, good sleep, and balanced nutrition, the body adaptively handles physical stress even later in life.

More muscle means better bone density. More activity means a higher quality of life. And progress always starts with a first step—whether it’s a daily walk, joining a gym, or showing up to class.

A motivating conversation for anyone beginning their fitness journey later in life, or wondering what’s possible in the years ahead.
